WINTER FIRE PREVENTION TIPS FOR YOUR PROPERTY
Many people associate “fires” with summertime. Afterall, it does seem like those nasty wildfires consume the summer season, doesn’t it? Well in fact, fires actually occur more in winter than in any other season, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
Fire damage can be devastating to your property. What isn’t completely burned is often damaged by smoke, soot or the water used to put out the flames. While we are ready to react in times of fire damage, we do hope that you never find yourself in the situation. Here are some tips to help prevent fire from happening in the first place during the winter season:
Keep flammable items at least 3 feet away from heat sources including, but not limited to, fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators, and space heaters.
Install a carbon monoxide detector and test it at least once a month.
When it comes to portable generators, it’s best to keep them outdoors and as far away from your home and any windows as possible.
If you have a fireplace on the property you own or manage, then it’s best to get the chimney cleaned by a professional at least once a year, especially right before the winter season starts.
If you have cigarette smokers on-site, make sure you are using a metal container that can properly store cooled ashes and make sure it’s at least 10 feet from your building.
Plug heat sources directly into an outlet and not into a powerstrip. When using a space heater, be sure to follow all the directions that it comes with.
